For a month or two, I wrote about every film I saw. It seems like this was a good idea, so I'll start again.

I saw Brad Pitt's A Mighty Heart on Sunday night. I wasn't quite sure what to expect: I had heard that the film was controversial, but I had not yet read any reviews. Though I knew the story of the Pearls, I didn't know much about the film.

I loved the opening of the film, he didn't wallow in the personal details. It would have been too invasive to start portraying their wedding or their lives before they moved to Karachi. They stuck to the events surrounding the kidnapping of Daniel Pearl, and they didn't let other events enter.

The footage of Karachi was very impressive. Though I'm not sure if it was filmed in Karachi, I believe it must have been. Pitt communicates the idea of living in as an ex-pat is like, the characters are all very believable.

Jolie's performance was excellent. The last film she did with Pitt was Mr and Mrs Smith, where neither character had the chance to show a lot of deep emotion, yet here Jolie had to rely on talent over sexiness to shine, and it worked great. One of my favourite scenes in the film was when she was walking down the street with Adam and Nouvelle Vague played In a Manner of Speaking. Classic... j'me paris!

8/10

El Laberinto del Fauno

Guillermo del Toro's newest film, which was nominated for six Oscars, reminded me a lot of Narnia. Fantasy mixed with WWI. A child's war mixed with an adult world - though they're completely different, somehow they correspond.

The film was odd because of the two levels of the film, but I think this was effective. What kind of film is it? Certainly not a child's movie, certainly not a normal fantasy, and certainly not history. It's rather a mix of all three. One review I read referred to it as dark poetry. Very violent, yet still beautiful.

The special effects were phenomenal. Some of the monsters and animals were incredibly real looking. The acting was also good. Ivana Baquero plays Ofelia, and the role is very well done.

7/10

Smokin' Aces

Joe Carnahan's film features a great list of actors, a somewhat entertaining plot, and lots of stereotypical characters. The inspiration definitely seems to be Tarantino. The same idea of multiple stories weaving in and out with lots of blood and sex.

The actors involved are all quite famous. I don't think I've ever seen Alicia Keyes or Common in a film before. They both performed well, and oddly enough end up together on the end of the film. Jeremy Piven did an excellent job portraying a strung-out, drugged-up mafioso.

decent film

7/10

The Good Shepherd

Deniro's new film the Good Shepherd is reminiscent of Munich. Both films tell true stores of the intelligence world. Instead of the glamourous James Bond, new films depict the hard life of intelligence. But with less politik, it emphasizes the history of how the CIA was started. Unlike Munich, it lacked the action and mystery.

The film was pretty good, and it shows how good an actor Matt Damon really is. His portrayal of a ultra-loyal workaholic is almost a bit scary.

Good film, tho long and lacking excitement.

6/10

Art School Confidential

I watched Art School Confidential with Joel a few nights ago. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I think I was hoping for more of an indy comedy. It was nothing of the sort. The film's about a young guy who goes to an art school and gets wrapped up in a big murder scandal.

The movie makes all of its laughs at the expensive of stereotypes. Though this can be funny, this was a little bit over done. The painters are idiots and not at all in touch with anything except their muse ... And they don't have any talent anyway. The gallery owners are greedy, and art losers go crazy. Unfortunately, they didn't quite exaggerate enough to be funny. Was it supposed to be an ironic exposee on art school? Was it supposed to be a comedy making fun of it? Because I didn't laugh too much nor did I find it representative of arties.

4/10

A Night at the Museum

A night at the museum... I was initially struck by the cool effects done with the camera. I love the shot the follows Edward Norton walking across the brick square ... The love scene with Jessica Biel was also very well done, tho it may not have been wholely appropriate. :p

The plot-line had a couple of good ideas, but it left far too many events unexplained. Things that couldn't happen seemed to have happened without any explanation. I hate movies that make you think one thing is happening and suddenly without any class tell you that something completely different happened. It's stupid ... That's what I didn't like Oceans 12 much either, but at least they did it with class.

5/10

Apocalypto

I haven't written about any of the movies I've seen lately, but not wanting to abandon this blog, I'll pick up again. I saw Apocalypto a few nights ago in theatres. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I thought the story went into he conquistadores. Actually, is almost solely about the natives on the yucatan peninsula.

The acting was excellent, especially considering none of them had ever acted before. Obviously the main actor, Jaguar Paw, and his wife were highlights. Both expressed a lot of real emotion. Other highlights include some of the jungle fight scenes, which were filmed in pretty creative, fun ways.

Gibson's portrayal of the Mayas is a bit sketchy to be honest. The Mayas were one of the most advanced civilizations, yet he depicts them as hunter-gatherers living in the forest and blood thirsty massacrists.

I wonder what Gibson's purpose for making the film was. What is it a critique on modern society? He begins and ends with the quote about a dying civilization ... Perhaps this could explain why he allowed so many historical inaccuracies - he wasn't trying to present a historical document, but a jab at Western society?

7/10

Frida

I didn't really know much about Frida before watching this movie, or at least I didn't think I did. Actually, I've apparently been to her house, and I've seen a lot of her and Rivera's paintings.

The movie is surprisingly good. I had heard that it was boring, but to the contrary, I think the story is well told, with many interesting twists. To start, the characters are diverse and flavourful. Frida, Rivera, Leo, and others .... all intermingled with art, politics, philosophy, and sex. Second, the film took an artsy twist - there are some great animated sections that are decently surrealistic. Frida's self portraits make reoccuring appearances, which was a good idea. The symbolism was good too.

The montages, likes the characters, are full of character. Though the film is obviously not mexican, it captures the color. I love the scenes of Mexico - xoximilco, the dresses, the bars ...

Salma Hayek does an excellent job. She gets to play a seductive, yet not-cute girl who is full of pain and frustration. I'm sure it's hard.

7/10

Cruel Intentions

Lacros' Les Liaisons Dangereuses comes to modern NYC aristocracy in the film Cruel Intentions. Though I can't say I recommend the film because of the content, there is something about it that is likable. Jetset romance and vengeance ...

Sarah Michelle Gellar's role as the villain was pretty good. I love how by the end Sebastian is turned into a hero. That made me laugh. Is the moral of the story that penitence reverses everything? I like the idea of it being a journal, but I think it would have been excellent to tell it from a journal, a sort of epistolary film - like the book. I was going to dl it, but I'm glad I didn't, and saw it in theatre.

I saw it with Ben and Tgirl who said it was a 'typical foreign film' ... I don't know what that means, and I'm not even sure Babel qualifies as a foreign film. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting was good, the setting was transnational yet super rooted culturally, and the soundtrack was excellent. The plot wasn't strong - compared with a typical american plot driven movie, but that wasn't the point.

Rinko Kikuchi was definitely the star of the film, though I may have seen her in a film or two before, she was excellent in this film. She was the character we got to know best, and yet big name actors like Pitt, Blanchette, and Gael García Bernal seemed to have more minor roles. Odd.

I'm not quite sure what Iñárritu is trying to get at. I would have thought that it was mostly about how we are all connected to one another around the globe, but apparently he himself says that it's about the modern family. Anyway ...

It seems like Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel, and Crash all share similar story lines ... Crash and 21 grams were weaker. Crash seemed too comercial. 21 grams was decent, and it did feature Charlotte Gainsbourg, but I'm not sure it was as clear. Amores Perros is classic, but Babel was cool because it seemed to connect the whole world and leave it so open for interpretation.

8/10

Mission Impossible 3

I saw mi3 a few nights ago. But it was a bit hard to watch. I'm not in the mood to write, and I watched this a long time ago. What stood out to me was the fact that it was a true story, and also the part where the tongue is bit off! That was intense. The movie certainly has a lot of potential, but I'm sure it was hard to get good actors for such defined characters as someone would meet in a prison in instanbul back in the 1970's. I liked how it launched right into the story, and didn't bother with long introductions, but the characters often seemed badly defined - like the crazy man who walks in circles. Classic chick flick. I watched the Notebook for the first time tonight. Rachel McAdams is beautiful as always. She also does a good job acting. The cinematography was pretty good. The warm colors were nice, and the whole movie created a very 'warm fuzzy' feeling.

The plot was decent, but I'm not sure the flashbacks worked. The old Ali wasn't up to par, though admittedly, her part was the hardest. how do you act like someone who can't remember? And why does memory come into so many films? I think that four out of the last twenty films I watched were about memory and memory problems. weird.

The highlight of the movie was the scene on the boat. Not only was it well filmed, but the dialogue was a step above the rest of the movie. The birds bit was just great enough to not be cheezy.

pretty good

6/10

The Crowne Affair

Pierce Brosnan is just classy and cool. Like his other films, he is chic, calm, and has lots of class. Unfortunately, this film didn't have much besides Pierce Brosnan. Rene Russo was a bit weird. She seemed to think she was 25 and super sexy, but she isn't. The story was ok, but a bit shallow and not too surprising. And why did Pierce Brosnan keep drinking red wine from a brandy glass?

5/10

The Departed

I saw the Martin Scorsese's 'The Departed' at the cinema on Friday. I didn't have any idea what to expect. From the title, I thought it was going to be some sort of underworld movie. I was very pleasantly surprised, and really enjoyed the film.

To start, the lineup is great: Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicolson, and Mark Wahlberg. They all have great performances, but I think I'll go as far as to say that it maybe be one of DiCaprio's better performances. He portrays so well the confusion and pain that he's going through.

The story is great, and the dialogue is also excellent. I love the parallelism (or perpendicularism?) between the two characters. The comparisons are strong. There were several times when the dialogue was really just genius, and made you want to know who came up with it.

The ending was also very satisfying. Maybe it's because one of the main writers was chinese, but it came out original and unique. I like how the bad (?) person finally gets away. It some much more realistic. I a real shakespearean tragedy. good film.

8/10

Road to Perdition

I can't believe that Tom Hanks is showing up in two of the last five movies I've written about. Tom Hanks is like Nicolas Cage, I don't like him as an actor, but I like his films in general. Compare Terminal, Road to Perdition, and Forrest Gump - Hanks masters three incredible different roles! Great acting.

Sam Mendes makes a good film that has the some of the appeal of Sin City. Doesn't every boy want to see men in trench coats shooting each other on a dark and rainy night? The comparison stops there. Road to Perdition has a fairly deep plot: a father and son story. The boy doesn't act great - especially compared with Tom.

Highlights for me were the massacre scenes at the end. They were filmed creatively, and in a tasteful way. Once Connor has been shot, the door swings open and you see his dead body in the mirror: nice.

Decent film.

6/10

The Sentinel

Clark Johnson's 'The Sentinel' brings back that question that is in the back of all of our minds: why do the American President's body guard dress so badly? Come on ... I'd expect a Mexican body guard to dress better than those guys!

Anyway ... decent film about a Secret Service agent who has an affair with the president's wife. The story is decent, but it is a little bit predictable. I'm not sure if I like him, but he's master story teller, and his films are certainly fairly revolutionary. He seems to have paved the way for films like Crash and Amores Perros.

Good film, the dialogue is genius, tho often a bit questionable. The first scene shows just how genius the lines will be. I love how they talk about Madonna. Talk about great character! I guess there's plot and there's character. French movies seem to have stories built on character, and not a character build on a story. I like that.

Brice has great lines - 'Pas de violence, c'est les vacances' and such. Also the whole casser thing is pretty funny. Lots of great lines, though the story was a bit lacking. It was too predictable that he would of course lose. On the other hand, I love how certain themes kept re-appearing: the Sirene and the casser theme and even the surf movie.

Funny movie...

8/10

Forrest Gump

And thus we return to the classics ... Forrest Gump is definitely Robert Zemeckis' best film. I watched this the other night with a Erick, Juan, Isaac, and Jonathan. Since I was the only american, it put a new perspective on it. What a good portrayal of the best of America. The American dream lives on.

The genius of the movie is obviously in Tom Hanks' great acting and narrating. The actors are all excellently casted, and they all perform great. The dialogue is what makes the film amazing - so many one line classics.

For me, the highlight of the film was Uma Thurman's stellar portrayal of a druggie gang lord's wife. She's a bit of a contradiction, and Quentin manages to get some great shots of her. One of the best scenes was in the restaurant - where the montages flip between her face and John Travolta's. I think it's nice.

Also, the drug scene was pretty well done ... She really looks scary! Tho, I found that Travolta's part was a bit weaker through this section. Maybe it's just that he's not one of my favourite actors - he's always the same.

Another good scene was in the car at the beginning when Samuel Jackson and John Travolta discuss the Royale with Cheese. Lol... I like how their dialogue kept returning back to it.

Pulp Fiction seems a bit like a collection of scenes rather than a traditional movie. Obviously, this was international, but sometimes I think there was a bit too much disconnect - but maybe that was the point.

8/10

The Shawshank Redemption

I watched the Shawshank Redemption with Joel, Jenn, and Jo last week. Though I'd heard of it, it was the first time I've seen Frank Darabont's classic. I thought it was interesting that he's French. No wonder it's good. :p

Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins were both great, and the story line was good too. I just find it monotonous when every prison movie finishes with an escape. For a while, I thought this was an exception. I like the hope theme, and the comparison of different people leaving the prison. That was a highlight.

Anyway .. I watched it last week and I don't remember too much.

No prison movie can match up with prisonbreak. I think it's probably a pretty accurate (tho stereotypical) picture of immigrant culture. The second half of the film, is the what would happen of if these immigrant kids ended up in a place like Beverly Hills. Clark does a great job of making you would if the poor immigrant kids aren't really cooler than all that money buys.

One highlight was the conversation the salvador boy has with the rich girl on her bed. Their conversation shows that really it's all the same.

Another nice touch was the boy was always asked where he was from. For the entire movie, he says that he's from the ghetto, until the end. As the boys arrive back in south central, some gangsta asks where he's from, and the latino answers, 'no where'... :D nice touch.

7/10

Coffee and Cigarettes

Coffee and Cigarettes is a serious of nine short episodes - all taking place around table with coffee and cigarettes. For an independent film, Jim Jarmusch managed to get a lot of very well known actors! The White Stripes, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Roberto Begnini, Kate Blanchett, Bill Murray, and the Wootang to name a few.

It's pretty funny, and it would be great to watch with friends I think. I doesn't get too deep, but a few times it gets a lot into what other people think of you. I love the scene where Alfred Molina is a big fan of Steve Coogan, but Coogan remains cold, and then when he finds out that Molina is a friend of some other actor, he tries to act like his best friend. Social games. Excellent. People change what they say according to what they think of someone and how they fit in to the social scene.

Good film.... definitely funny, but with some more serious questions to ask - but no statements. I like it.

8/10

Trainspotting

Danny Boyle's drug movie 'Trainspotting' seems to be a very influential movie. I was almost surprised to see that it was made in 1996. It was ahead of its time.

The film was well written, and the actors are all very good. The film has lots of good surprises, and it shows how frustrating sin can be. At the end, as he chooses to leave and to 'choose life', you can't help but question his sincerity. How many other times had he tried to break out? The film is a bit of a downward, circular progression - so you have to wonder if he'll make it.

The story ends with a lot of questions ... What happens to Diane, does he succeed in choosing life, etc. But that almost seems appropriate for a drug movie.

The hit scenes were very well done. The worst of them was when he dived in the toilet! lol... Also as he's pulling out in his parent's house. Very powerful. Another highlight of the film is the soundtrack. Gotta love 'Born Slippy Nuxx'. nice.

8.5/10

Lost in Translation

I think that Sophia Coppola is becoming one of my favourite producers. Her films are so atmospheric. There's something about the combination of the great music (air, phoenix) with the shots she gets. I love how she kept getting the girl in "lost in translation". She's always sitting looking over tokyo, often with headphones. It's great.

The comedy was pretty good too. I liked some of the translation scenes. I like how at the end she remains pure and he chooses not to do anything - of course the irony is that he slept with that weird singer lady. Is adultery worse because he didn't even love her? Would it have been better if he had loved her? I don't know...

Anyway .. pretty good film. Great feel, though the whole story is about to married people's relationship. Odd, but somehow good.

7/10

l'enfant

The Dardenne brothers' film 'l'enfant' was made very simply. The plot is simple and has few complications, there is no sound track, and even the shots are simple and few.

I was impressed by the realism of this film. It's characters all seem to be real life people, and the story is almost too convincing. I'm not quite sure what do make of the film. I wonder what inspired the brothers to make it. Could it be a commentary on lower-class western life? I don't know ...

The end of the film took me a bit by surprise. To see the couple crying in the prison was a harsh image to fade off of.

7/10

Butterfly Effect

Eric Bress's film 'The Butterfly Effect' was reminiscent of 'Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind'. It's odd that two movies would come out in 2004 that dealt with the memory ... and both films ponder existentialism.

Ashton Kutcher's performance stands out - tho it might just be because we're used to him in comedies, not films so serious as this one. It's plot(s) are many and all deal with the gravity of choices made. Consequences are of decisions are immediately seen and felt.

The end of the movie was perhaps the most shocking. You don't expect an american movie to end so dramatically. Did he have to commit suicide to make everyone else's life better? Was that really the answer? When the baby strangles himself in the womb, it felt cheesy, but at the same time the viewer can't deny the gravity of his choice.

6/10

24 Hour Party People

I just watched the story of Tony Wilson in the film '24 Hour Party People'. The film was made as a sort of mock documentary. Apparently, they took a lot of artistic freedom, and changed the some of the details. The story follows Tony Wilson as he follows the roots of the punk movement, and then the beginning of the rave scene.

I enjoyed the movie, because it was about someone who was ahead of their time in the arts. He never makes it rich and cashes in, but instead he's always a bit too far ahead. What's cool is that he doesn't care. He's not in it for the money.

I also like the fact that he's well educated, and doesn't seem to be a typical punk, but he still manages to have such a big influence. He also manages to ride through different waves of art and culture -- that's cool.

6/10

Accepted

Steve Pink's Accepted was about what I expected going into it. The story line is great, bringing together drama and comedy. At the end, I had a lot of questions about what it was proposing.

What made the film so surprising, is that Sam Lion never learns. The actors are great: Charlotte Gainsbourg and Sean Penn's performances are both outstanding.

The film was apparently shot chronologically, but afterwards edited in a non-chronological line. This creates a puzzle in your mind, and it isn't until the very end that everything starts coming together and making sense. It first you almost think that the different chapters are set on random play - but then slowly the plot takes shape.

I can't wait for babel. :D

6/10

Amores Perros

Alejandro González Iñárritu's first part of his triology is a strange movie. When I first saw it, I wondered if Crash was based on it. Like Crash, it starts with a car accident, and then goes back ... But just when you think the movie is finishing and you've caught up with the beginning, it keeps going.

I felt it almost a bit long, and almost two realistic in places. Adultery and dogs are the recurring elements. of the movie basically. The harsh realism gives a good picture of Mexico I think. Gael García Bernal does an amazing job portraying the lower-middle class mexican boy.

Class must be the theme of the movie. It starts out with Gael García Bernal and his brother's wife and their story. Then it movies on to a rich couple and their problems, and finally it goes to a man who was rich, and had left it all. I guess the point is that they all have the same troubles: infidelity, fickle emotions, and ... dogs.

6/10

Marie Antoinette

Sophie Cappola's Marie Antoinette is a fun movie. I like her films a lot because they manage of their artsy and surreal feels. Marie Antoinette was a weird mix of history, art, and culture. Though set in 18th century Versailles, the music is current and the acting style is contemporary.

Usually in films like this, the soundtrack includes Air and Phoenix, and some post punk groups like the Cure and New Order. As the parties roar and Crystal champagne flow at the chateau, you if the scenes weren't affected by Sophie and Kirstin's nights aux Champs earlier this spring. The montages are modern and vogue, not stuffy and traditional.

The whole movie feels a bit like a runway show. The designers included on the project did some impressive work. As a film, it definitely gets 9 stars from an artistic perspective. Unfortunately, the content doesn't live up to fashion, music, and montages of the film. I guess it captures the lifestyle of the stars well - and puts in contemporary language. I felt like it spent a bit too much on Marie trying to sleep with her husband, and I would kind of have enjoyed to see more of Marie's life after bastille day.

anyway ...

8/10
